After a few weeks since returning to Poland, we felt the urge to go somewhere again. Easter and the long May weekend were approaching, so we started looking for something interesting and cheaper than Polish tourist resorts, which tend to be particularly expensive during the holiday season. By chance, while passing by a travel agency, we noticed an attractively priced "deal of the day," unfortunately with a departure from Katowice. Coincidentally, a few days before the flight, Robert had a several-day meeting in Krakow, so as you can imagine, the plan to "escape from Torun" immediately emerged. A short trip to Krakow for a few days (where the inviting institution provided us with a free hotel), followed by 7 days in Greece at an unbelievably good price.
Everything was going well, but on the day of departure to Krakow, Pia developed a high fever. Robert went alone, and we hoped that our little one would quickly recover. Luckily, that's what happened, and we didn't have to give up our plans. The only concern was the thought of a 5-hour car journey to the airport while Pia was in a period of increased activity. It wasn't easy to keep our little wild child contained for 5 hours, but with the help of a tablet full of pictures, cheerful singing, reading books, and other improvised entertainment, we managed to avoid a rebellion.
The flight from Katowice to Kos took only about 2 hours, and our fellow travelers, the Silesians, turned out to be incredibly friendly people. Most of them were large families, very open to making new acquaintances, friendly, interested in fellow travelers, and especially interested in little ones. Our Pia won their hearts, and even on the plane, she made friends with a whole bunch of girls and boys, and we made some nice acquaintances.
Before the trip, we didn't have time to gather information and read reviews about the chosen hotel, so we were a bit worried about what to expect. Fortunately, it turned out that the chosen hotel was a beautiful, new complex located a few kilometers from the airport, in a peaceful and charming bay. What's more, for the first time, we arrived at a hotel that looked much better in person than in the travel agency brochures.
The only downside was the timing of our arrival. It turned out that the first day of our stay coincided with the start of the new season, and unfortunately, a significant portion of the attractions was not available to holidaymakers. This fact was a major disappointment for us. We purchased the travel package from a well-known German tour operator, and we were convinced that everything would be perfectly organized. The change in the departure time was particularly irritating. Originally, our return flight was scheduled for a perfect time at 2:00 PM, but after a few days, we learned that we were departing at 4:00 in the morning. You can imagine how inconvenient it is to travel from the hotel to the airport at 1:00 AM. A nightmare. Unfortunately, these are the realities of using travel agency offers. That's why we try to avoid this type of travel arrangement.
Returning to the brighter aspects of our trip to Kos, our hotel turned out to be a fantastic place for long walks, sunbathing, and enjoying the pleasant (albeit sometimes changeable) spring weather. Initially skeptical about the local cuisine, Pia accepted a few dishes and, of course, enthusiastically devoured olives.
She also had great fun testing various playground equipment available at several well-equipped play areas. The undisputed winner was a playhouse with a slide, which our little one loved.
Of course, nothing could compete with the antics in the pool. Despite the slightly windy weather and a slight cold, we didn't restrict Pia's access to her favorite water fun.
The numerous stairs, slopes, and descents also provided an excellent training ground for improving motor skills. Furthermore, the "fellow vacationers" were a wonderful addition to the charms of Greece. Pia loved playing with Julka, Nadia, Wiktor, and other children. As for us, we had the opportunity to chat with other parents, not necessarily about the intricacies of the parenting process ;)
Oh... we highly recommend departures from Katowice - Pyrzowice. The airport is family-friendly, with many amenities and a comfortable, spacious business lounge. The only issue is the overzealous border guards. We had trouble getting water and food for our little one through the security check. With a similar set of items, there's no problem at larger airports, but the authorities in Katowice are exceptionally vigilant. The situation is the opposite in Kefalos. The airport there is old, ugly, dirty, and not suitable for families with small children. On the other hand, the security is surprisingly "liberal," completely uninterested in what appeared on the scanner monitor, and the metal detectors are so unresponsive that not even Iron Man would set them off.
