In the case of previous trips, I have never encountered such a polarized issue. On one hand, both Malta and Gozo have a well-developed network of bus connections, but on the other hand, traveling with a toddler by public transportation can be quite an adventurous undertaking.
Among the undeniable advantages of traveling by bus is the price. An adult pays 1.5 Euro for a day pass, while children under 3 or 4 travel for free. The buses are modern, well-equipped, and perfectly maintained. Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver. Another advantage of this mode of transportation is its coverage. By bus, we can reach virtually any place in Malta (and Gozo) 24 hours a day. Each driver speaks excellent British English and generally exhibits a high level of personal courtesy.
After these considerations, it may seem that everything speaks in favor of using the bus. However, there are serious drawbacks. The first and most significant issue is safety. Only one stroller can be accommodated on each ride (which should be seen as a positive). Drivers ensure that passengers give up their seats and that the stroller is properly parked. Unfortunately, no one can control other passengers who, during sudden braking, might end up on the stroller, posing a huge risk to the toddler. We must remember that drivers maneuver large vehicles through very narrow and winding streets, which unfortunately necessitates frequent use of the brakes. Our first experience occurred 15 seconds after departure: sudden braking, and two Indian women almost landed on Pia. It was a nightmare! Therefore, for safety reasons, one person must securely hold the stroller against unsteady passengers, while another person directly takes care of the child.
Another problem is the bus schedule. Each bus stop provides precise information about the departure times of specific bus lines. However, unfortunately, they have nothing to do with reality. The schedule exists, but from what we observed, it simply doesn't apply. Vehicles move at their own rhythm, disregarding established rules.
Is there an alternative to buses? If you enjoy walking, and your stroller can handle extreme unevenness, it can be a good alternative. However, even in this case, one must be very cautious. In many places, sidewalks are either nonexistent or so narrow and blocked by cars that maneuvering a stroller becomes impossible.
Taxis are also available everywhere, but haggling is necessary, and one must be careful not to encounter an imitator of the racing driver from the French mega-hit "TAXI." On our way back, we tried Ecabs and were very satisfied. Competitive prices, online booking, reservation confirmations, and all information sent directly to your mobile phone - efficient, convenient, and professional.
W przypadku poprzednich wyjazdów nigdy nie zetknęłam się z tak spolaryzowanym zagadnieniem. Z jednej strony zarówno na Malcie jak i Gozo funkcjonuje doskonale rozwinięta sieć połączeń autobusowych z drugiej zaś podróż z Maluszkiem komunikacją miejską jest dość brawurowym przedsięwzięciem.
Wśród niezaprzeczalnych zalet podróży autobusem jest przede wszystkim cena. Za jeden dzień dorosły płaci 1,5 Euro. Dzieci do 3 lub 4 lat podróżują za darmo. Autobusy są nowoczesne, dobrze wyposażone i perfekcyjnie utrzymane. Bilety kupujemy bezpośrednio u kierowcy. Kolejną zaletą tej formy komunikacji jest jej zasięg. Autobusem jesteśmy w stanie dotrzeć do praktycznie każdego miejsca na Malcie (i Gozo) i to 24h na dobę. Każdy kierowca włada doskonałym, brytyjskim angielskim i przeważanie cechuje się wysokim poziomem kultury osobistej.
Cóż po tych wywodach mogłoby się wydawać, że wszystko przemawia za poruszaniem się autobusem. Niestety są jednak poważne mankamenty. Pierwszym i najistotniejszy jest kwestia bezpieczeństwa. Z przejazdu może korzystać wyłącznie jeden wózek (co należy traktować in plus). Kierowcy pilnują aby pasażerowie ustąpili miejsca, a tym samym żeby wózek był poprawnie zaparkowany. Niestety jednak nikt nie jest w stanie zapanować nad podróżnymi, którzy podczas gwałtownego hamowania lądują na wózku stanowiąc tym samym olbrzymie zagrożenie dla Maleństwa. Musimy pamiętać, że kierowcy poruszają się dużymi pojazdami po bardzo wąskich i krętych uliczkach co niestety wymusza częste posługiwanie się hamulcem. Nasze pierwsze doświadczenie to 15 sekund po starcie, gwałtowne hamowanie i dwie hinduski nieomalże lądują na Pii. Koszmar!!!. Dlatego też dla bezpieczeństwa jedna osoba bezwzględnie musi asekurować wózek przed bezwładnymi pasażerami, a druga sprawować bezpośrednią opiekę nad dzieckiem.
Kolejny problem to rozkład przejazdów. Na każdym przystanku znajdziecie precyzyjne informacje na temat odjazdów autobusów poszczególnych linii. Upps niestety jednak nie mają one nic wspólnego z rzeczywistością. Siatka jest ale z tego co udało nam się zaobserwować - najnormalniej w świecie nie obowiązuje. Pojazdy poruszają się własnym rytmem nie zważając na ustalone reguły.
Czy jest alternatywa dla autobusów…. Jeżeli lubicie spacerować i wasz wózek jest w stanie pokonywać ekstremalne nierówności to jest to dobra alternatywa. Jednak i w tym przypadku trzeba być bardzo ostrożnym. W wielu miejscach brak jest chodników lub są na tyle wąskie i zablokowane przez samochody, że przeciśnięcie się wózkiem jest totalnie niemożliwe.
Wszędzie dostępne są również taksówki, niestety trzeba się targować i uważać aby nie trafić na naśladowcę rajdowca z francuskiego mega hitu „TAXI”. W drodze powrotnej wypróbowaliśmy Ecabs i byliśmy bardzo zadowoleni. Konkurencyjna cena, zamawianie online, potwierdzenia rezerwacji oraz wszelkie informacje bezpośrednio na komórkę - sprawnie, wygodnie i profesjonalnie.
